A modern-day retelling of A Christmas Carol…
Caroline is a cynic career woman living the high life in Manhattan where love and relationships are but a distant memory of the past.
But after a freak accident on Christmas Eve, Caroline receives a visit from a cheeky spirit of Christmas Past, Present, Yet to Come, and—most importantly—Christmas That Could Have Been. When she wakes up on Christmas Day suddenly married with three kids and living two doors down from her parents in New Jersey, Caroline has a chance to experience the life she would’ve had if she’d made a different choice.
Will small-town life as a mother and a wife make her rediscover what’s really important in life?
Caroline is a high flying CEO of her own publishing company in New York. She’s all about the work and money and is not looking forward to spending Christmas with her family. But she goes, and just as she’s leaving she falls and bangs her head. Ending up in hospital, she received a visit from a Christmas spirit who takes her on a journey to see her Christmases of past, present and future but when these don’t seem to have much affect, she takes drastic action…… Caroline wakes up on Christmas morning to a house full of children and a husband – her worst nightmare. Left to experience the life she could have had, will Caroline realise that there’s more to life than money…….
I absolutely loved this. I was laughing pretty much from page one and didn’t stop till the end of the book. I smiled all the way through this and honestly didn’t want it to end.
The ‘real’ Caroline will give you all the Scroogey vibes – her company even has the name Marley in it! She comes across as independent, hard and cold, and even though she’s not particularly likeable she will have you laughing! The travels across her past, present and future let us meet different versions of Caroline, ending with Mum Caroline. I absolutely loved her by the end and was so satisfied with how things turned out. The other characters in this are fantastic too. Sam is everything a woman could want and the kids are adorable, clever and hilarious (especially Jo). And the Christmas ghost is just brilliant!
The story is so clever, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. How Camilla has bought A Christmas Carol into modern times is fantastic, and really brings the story to life. The way she weaved elements of the original tale into this was spectacular. It’s heartwarming, humorous, and fantastic. The writing is witty and an absolute pleasure to read.
Honestly, I can’t praise this enough. I have a feeling this will go on my festive ‘to be read’ list every year. An absolutely fantastic, clever, festive book with a cracking amount of humour and fantastic characters. Highly recommended by me…..now go get it!
about the author
Camilla is an engineer turned writer after she quit her job to follow her husband on an adventure abroad.
She’s a cat lover, coffee addict, and shoe hoarder. Besides writing, she loves reading–duh!–cooking, watching bad TV, and going to the movies–popcorn, please. She’s a bit of a foodie, nothing too serious. A keen traveler, Camilla knows mosquitoes play a role in the ecosystem, and she doesn’t want to starve all those frog princes out there, but she could really live without them.
