the blurb

Vason had to be the only person in The Hyris Empire who wanted nothing to do with discovering the chosen one.

So of course, there she was, standing before him in the moonlight.

Her amber eyes glowed unnaturally as shards of ice rose into the surrounding air, poised to strike. She had already killed the other watchers.

I cannot get caught up in this.

His sister–who was still lost in the Knoxen Slave Network–had to remain his priority. With the right resources finally at his disposal, all he had to do was to keep his head down. Yet, the woman before him was the only one who could save their people. Her body was tensed like a frightened bird. He was the only one that stood in the way of her escape.

Dammit.

my review

This is a fantastic debut young adult fantasy novel from a lovely young author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!  There was tons of magic, action and intrigue and I felt like I was on a bit of rollercoaster with the characters; thinking they were good, then wondering if they were turning bad……and it kept me hooked!

The beginning of the story is intense and quite hard to follow to start with, as there are so many new characters that you’re trying to get to know.  Stick with it….trust me it’s worth it!   For me, I find this with a lot of fantasy novels as they have strange names and it takes a while to figure out who is who, and this is no different.

Mackay has done a good job of character and world building, and I enjoyed watching parts of it come to life.  I’d love to learn more about the different places in the sequel, and more of the background of some of the characters.

In terms of characters, I loved Vason and Mackay has done a fabulous job of helping the reader to build a relationship with him, but there is definitely more to learn in future novels (and that will keep me coming back!).  Robin, Oryx and Aon are also brilliant characters, and I can’t wait to learn more about Godiva!. Then there are the one’s you will not like…..but I’m not saying anymore (no spoilers from me!)

I really enjoyed the plot, and although slightly confusing in the beginning it does all come together and makes perfect sense later on.  The first part of the book feels like you’re getting your bearings and then the second part kicks off and is full on action packed and I loved it!!  I love the use of elemental and energy magic and the gifts that each of the characters have.

Each chapter begins with an extract from textbooks from their world, and this is brilliant.  One of the characters is learning and we’re learning with them.  It really helps to understand what comes throughout the book ~ great addition by Mackay.

Overall, I enjoyed this so much and I’m looking forward to the sequel!  Well done Marie for a wonderful debut, I can’t wait to see where book 2 takes us.  If you’re a fantasy/YA fantasy fan, or love a bit of magic or action, then you should definitely check this out.  Recommended by me!!

And remember,  from today you can get this free on kindle for FIVE DAYS ONLY.  So don’t hesitate – go and download today!! (Links above).

about the author

Born in Coventry, England in 1994, I currently live in BC, Canada and I spend my time–when I’m not writing–in the nursing profession.

If I’m not in a coffee shop – typing up a storm, you might find me at my local writer’s group, beta reading with a hot cup of tea, or perhaps I’m off travelling somewhere epic (if I’m lucky).

The voices I bring to the paper draw from the distinct social settings in which I have lived, the many places I have travelled, and from my time in health care.
