author q&a with lorey durston
Lorey Durston Aka Gemma and Sarah. Gemma is unavailable to answer questions, so I (Sarah) am answering on her behalf.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
Gemma and I (Sarah) are best friends who literally live at the bottom of each other’s gardens. I am a single mother to 3 children, and Gemma is married to Adam and has 2 sons Max and Zak.
What inspired you to start writing?
Devastatingly last year Gemma and Adam lost their eldest son Max at the age of 12. After an awful time for Gemma and the Covid lock down in place we decided to complete a tick on our bucket list and help Gemma get through a tough time by writing our first ever book. We never imagined becoming authors or publishing the book but thought ‘f*ck it why not life is too short.’
How many books have you written and published?
This is our first, we are currently writing a second of which we are really excited about. It’s another psychological thriller, but we have taken on board everything that we have learnt on our journey and applied it to this book and cannot wait to share it with you all.
Which book, out of all the books you have written, is your favourite and why?
We have only completed one – Carrying Clover. It will always be a very special book to us as it is our first one, it has taught us so much, helping Gemma through a hard time.
How do you choose the names of your characters?
We decide on the characters traits and profile, and then brainstorm names and choose the names that we like and that match the character profile.
Which of your characters would you want to be stranded on an island with, and why?
It would have to be Lou. Lou is a great cook, practical and could calm anyone down in any situation.
Who is your favourite author and which of their books is your favourite, and why?
B.A Paris – Behind closed doors. We have read all her books and always look forward to her next release. We read behind closed doors a few years ago now, and it’s one of the only books that have stay in our heads.
What is the first thing you can remember writing?
Durston – At college I wrote, illustrated, and made a huge child’s pop-up book for the course I was doing, both tutors gave me an A**.
Lorey – My first memories were letters to my friends. I loved writing letters as a child and my boyfriend then, now husband still has letters that I wrote to him.
What other jobs have you done other than being an author?
Apart from the amazing job of being a full-time mum, we have both worked in the Hospitality industry as teenagers part time. Gemma has worked in a hospital A and E department, and Sarah a systems technician.
If you could get in a time machine and had one chance to travel, where would you go? (Backwards or forwards!)
Sarah – my son would never forgive me if I didn’t say and take him with me back to see the dinosaurs. He loves them, and I guess they would be pretty amazing to see.
If you could have one conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Max Gemma’s son, he always had a smile on his face but was never able to talk. It would be amazing to hear his voice.
What are your favourite things to do?
Spending time with our families would be at the top, then writing. We also love to walk with the dogs for inspiration.
What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
Nothing strange has ever happened to me (Sarah) that I can think of. Gemma on the other hand. I remember her telling me the following story…
Gemma and her boyfriend (Adam now husband) in their late teens went down a country lane at night and parked up in a secluded spot, hand brake on and ignition off. They began getting ‘naughty’ when the car started spinning around. They drove out of there as quick as they could without even getting dressed.
If you could give your younger writing self any advice, what would it be?
Believe in yourself!
And finally, Name one book you think everyone should read?!
Behind closed doors, BA Paris the one book we both love and still in our heads.
