Q&A with Hana Sheik
Tell us a bit about yourself:
Hi! My name is Hana, and I’m a new Harlequin Romance/Mills & Boon True Love author. I love writing and reading romance, and when I’m not dreaming up kissing stories, you can find me baking, playing video games, attempting to crochet, and catching up on my K-dramas.
What inspired you to start writing?
I love reading, especially romance fiction. As soon as I realized I wanted to tell my own stories, I started writing. Fanfiction at first, and then I graduated to original fiction. I have to credit my dad as well! He gave me my first creative writing journal and encouraged me to pursue my dream-turned-reality of being an author.
How many books have you written and published?
Second Chance to Wear His Ring is my second book published. My first was a limited-edition holiday novella that I hope to edit and publish again someday.
How do you choose the names of your characters?
Love this question! I don’t keep track of names, but I have spent hours searching for the perfect names for my characters. My only rule is that I try avoiding names that are too similar for my hero and heroine. I try and pick names for their meaning, and sometimes I choose them because I like how they sound. I think most writers will agree, naming is the fun part!
Which of your characters would you want to be stranded on an island with, and why?
Another good question!
I’d have to choose Amal, my heroine from Second Chance to Wear His Ring. (Sorry to my hero, Manny!) She’s an architect, so she would be handy building a shelter. 🙂
Who is your favourite author and which of their books is your favourite, and why?
Honestly, I couldn’t choose a favourite author even if I tried. Too many amazing authors to name. Though if I had to choose one, it’d be Kerrelyn Sparks. I can’t get enough of her Embraced by Magic series! A perfect blend of sweeping fantasy, humorous shenanigans, and sexy romance.
What is the first thing you can remember writing?
I started (and sadly never finished) my first original piece of fiction when I was 15. It was supposed to be an older YA paranormal romance series. The hero was an incubus lord living incognito, and he abducted the heroine because she discovered his identity. It had a whole cast of paranormal entities (redcaps, dragons, nixies). Maybe I’ll return to it someday…
What other jobs have you done other than being an author?
I’ve worked in retail for a long time, but I’ve also been an insurance data entry operator and romance fiction ghostwriter.
If you could get in a time machine and had one chance to travel, where would you go?
Back to early or mid 2019 to warn everyone to prepare for the 2020 pandemic would be my first answer these days! Though if I got to choose another time, it’d be the Middle Ages in Al-Andalus. I have a huge fascination for the history when the Muslim state existed. I’m also currently watching El Cid on Amazon Prime, and it’s pretty cool.
If you could have one conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Toughie! I’d pick the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna. I am obsessed with her story. I own Royal Diaries: Anastasia by Carolyn Meyer and My Anastasia by Sharon Stewart and I loved to re-read both books as a kid. Personally, I think she’d be a pretty-kick ass person to interview. It’s sad what happened to her and her family, but the abundance of stories that have come from their tragic tale is truly fascinating. I wonder what she would think of how contemporary media portray her and her family? And how did she really feel about Rasputin? Hmmm…
What are your favourite things to do?
When I’m not writing, I love reading, baking, playing video games, and as of late I’m trying to learn how to crochet. It’s challenging but fun!
What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
I love hearing and reading ghost stories, but I haven’t had any strange, spooky experiences of my own yet. One day hopefully! Besides that I haven’t had a lot of crazy, strange experiences that are worth noting. I’m pretty boring, unfortunately.
If you could give your younger writing self any advice what would it be?
I wish I could tell myself to throw away the need to write a perfect first draft and just write. It took me years to finish my first novel, and that fact remains one of my biggest regrets.
Name one book you think everyone should read?!
Haha! I’ll say that Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey (both the book and the movie starring JJ Feild) is my favourite of her books. Apologies to Mr. Darcy’s fans, but I’ve got the biggest heart-eyes for Henry Tilney.
And finally, tell us about your most recent book and where we can find it?
My debut Harlequin Romance/Mills & Boon, Second Chance to Wear His Ring, is out to the world now (yay!). It wasn’t my first book written, but it’s the book of my heart.
Thanks for having me on your blog, Chelle! xx
