Also today I’m delighted to be on the blog tour for the Audible version of Bone Deep by Sandra Ireland, a story of betrayal, murder, love and sibling rivalry…..
What happens when you fall in love with the wrong person?
The consequences threaten to be far-reaching and potentially deadly.
Bone Deep is a contemporary novel of sibling rivalry, love, betrayal and murder. It is a dual narrative, told in alternative chapters by Mac, a woman bent on keeping the secrets of the past from her only son, and the enigmatic Lucie, whose own past is something of a closed book. Their story is underpinned by the creaking presence of an abandoned water mill and haunted by the local legend of two long-dead sisters, themselves rivals in love and ready to point an accusing finger from the pages of history.

This had me hooked!
Lucie has arrived in a remote part of Scotland for a new job supporting Mac – an older lady who needs a bit of support, and is writing a book on myths and legends of the area. Lucie arrives with her own secrets though – the reason why she’s moved away from home.
Mac is seemingly a quite grumpy, but harmless old lady but she also has her own secrets…..
When Lucie and Mac’s son Arthur start getting closer, Mac isn’t impressed….especially when she learns of the secret Lucie is hiding. But the ultimate question to this story is…how will it end?! Will Lucie and Arthur actually end up together? Will they find out Mac’s secrets? And what will happen with the secrets Lucie has been hiding from her family – will they find out? And what meaning to the myths have that Mac is writing about?
The chapters alternate between Lucie and Mac – each with a different person narrating which is fantastic. We learn all about the things they are hiding, bit by bit which really keeps you on the edge of your seat….especially where Mac is concerned!
In terms of characters, both Lucie and Mac come across a pretty grumpy! Lucie is also really quite standoffish and rude. At first I didn’t like her much but I did warm to her slightly towards the end – although I did feel sorry for Arthur who seems like such a genuinely lovely man. Mac’s had her fair share of troubles over the years, and as the signs of ageing start to show themselves, you do feel for her….but then things change…..(I’ll say no more).
The narration was FANTASTIC! I really felt that Mac and Lucie were in my car with me as I was driving along listening to their stories.
This is a fantastic, gripping kind of mystery that will keep you wanting more, and will get you thinking. It covers so many issues like sibling rivalry and betrayal, as well as love and the fact that sometimes you can’t help who you fall for….but it might not turn out for the best.
I really enjoyed this, and would definitely recommend! I couldn’t wait to get in my car to hear another chapter!
