Happy Sunday my lovelies! Today I’m on my last blog tour for 2019 (although hopefully a few more reviews to come!) and am closing off this tour. I’m delighted to be reviewing the third book in the ‘Celtic Fervour’ series, After Whorl: Donning Double Cloaks by Nancy Jardine….
AD 73 Northern Roman Britain
Brennus of Garrigill—Bran—monitors Roman activity across Brigantia. Stability prevails till AD 78 when Agricola, Governor of Britannia, orders complete conquest of all barbarians. Brennus heads north, seeking the Caledon who will lead the northern tribes against Rome.
Ineda treks northwards with her master, Tribune Valerius – supplies officer for Agricola’s Britannia campaigns. At Pinnata Castra, she escapes and seeks fellow Brigantes congregating for battle in the north.
The Legions of the Roman Empire and the Caledon allies clash at Beinn na Ciche in AD 84, but where are Brennus and Ineda?
The adventures of the Garrigill Clan continue…

I was delighted to be back with Brennus, Ineda, Lorcan and Nara and their respective families!
Brennus finally returns home after a long time away, and his brother Lorcan is delighted having thought him killed in the Battle at Whorl. But Brennus is on a mission, set in the last book and under the name of Bran of Witton. But he’s still heartbroken after not knowing what happened to the love of his life Ineda at the end of the last book.
Ineda, however, is now a Roman slave under Tribune Valerius. Although she realises that she’s in a somewhat ‘lucky’ position she still manages to find a way to help her fellow Celts. Eventually after many years she finally manages to escape….but will the Roman’s catch up with her? Or will she and Brennus finally find each other again?
With inside intelligence being sent to the Celtic tribes, they are able to try and get a step ahead of their Roman enemies, and a huge battle ensues towards the end….but will they be victorious? Will our favourite characters make it? And where will this book leave us……ready for the fourth and final book?
If you’ve read my reviews of the first 2 books, you will know I’m a fan of this series. They are so well researched and it gives us a brilliant insight in to what the lives of the Celtic tribes may have been like, and how the Roman’s came and invaded our country. This story follows their journey north as they continue their campaign to rule the whole of Britannia, and to bring the Celts to their way of life. It’s great to read about the Celts fighting back, and continuing to rally together for the sake of their lands. I also love that Nancy always puts a bit at the end of the book, around the actual historical significance of bits mentioned throughout the novel.
I was so excited to be back with Lorcan and Nara and to see how their lives and moved on. And although Brennus is heart broken, he does go on to find some form of happiness as he helps his fellow tribes. All the way through I was absolutely willing Brennus and Ineda to finally find each other again…..you’ll have to read this to find out if it actually happens!
I’m really looking forward to reading the final book in the series in the new year and to see how things finally pan out….but desperately hope all of my favourites make it!!
Another brilliant read if you’re a historical fiction fan, and if you love a bit of romance!
