my thoughts

When a woman is found brutally murdered in her apartment, Detective John Steel is bought in to work alongside his partner Samantha McCall to investigate.  But it’s clear from the start that there’s more to it, especially when the body turns out to be someone important to one of their colleagues.

In a race against time, Steel and McCall must work to find out who is responsible for the murder, why and what it is they’re looking for.  And with an old adversary popping back up, can Steel make it out of this alive?

This is the first book I’ve read in the John Steel series and I found it gripping and full of action!  Fast-paced, this will keep you on the edge of your seat with the many unexpected twists and turns that crop up throughout.

For me, I do feel like it would have been good to have read the previous books in the series to get to know Steel better, and the continuing storyline that appears to be running.   I felt that I didn’t connect with Steel as much as I might have if I’d read other books.  There were enough hints about previous storylines but I did feel that I struggled a little in places.  However, I’ll definitely be going back to read the others when I’m looking for some action!

In terms of the characters, I did like Steel though and he definitely gives off a Batman cross James Bond vibe!!  I feel like there’s more to him that we don’t know yet…..  Sam was a fab character; I always love a strong female and she plays the part perfectly.  The other characters in this are also good, and I absolutely loved one of the villains.  Again he came across very James Bond villainy (is that a word?!) – and I even made up my own voice for him!

The action is well described and really sucks you in.  I felt like I was watching either a James Bond film or something like Mission Impossible.  There are so many tense moments in this, and the authors writing style will draw you in perfectly.

Overall, other than the slight distance I felt from Steel, I really enjoyed this.  If you’re an action fan, or a crime thriller fan then you will enjoy this; and if you love a bit of Batman or James Bond then you need to check this out.  I’d definitely read the other books in the series, and know where to come now if I need a bit of heart stopping action! Recommended by me.
