Fiercely resilient, singular, always well turned out, Veronica McCreedy has lived an incredible 87 years. Most of them alone, in her huge house by the sea. Veronica has recently discovered a late-life love for family and friendship, adventure and wildlife. More specifically, she has found a love for penguins!

When she’s invited to co-present a wildlife documentary, far away in the southern hemisphere, she jumps at the chance. Even though this new adventure it will put her in the spotlight, just when she thought she would soon fade into the wings.  Veronica might just be about to find out that perhaps it’s never too late to shine?

my thoughts

This is such a charming book and I adore all the penguins! I haven’t read the previous book so wasn’t sure what to expect, but I loved the characters.  Veronica is a strong and resilient older lady and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes.  It especially made me chuckle when she forgot where things were, or fell into a little nap – the things that old age will do to all of us!  Daisy is an absolute delight – she’s had a tough time but she’s full of energy and is just wonderful.  And the supporting cast are all a great bunch.

The other thing I really like about this is the underlying messages about the environment – it’s not pushy but makes it real, and will definitely make you think about how you can do your bit.

If you love animals or penguins you will absolutely adore this – I have learnt so many facts about penguins which was completely unexpected!

So, if you’re looking for an uplifting, yet thought-provoking story with a wonderful plot, strong and resilient characters, fabulous settings and tons of penguins, then this is for you! Highly recommended by me!
