Morning everyone! So before I do my June wrap up, I’ve got one final review for you and it’s a cracker! Having loved the first book I read from Nia Lucas, Love Punked, I was over the moon to be asked if I’d like to review her next book ~ Choices Shape, Losses Break so of course I said yes!! This is another brilliantly written, relatable, funny and sassy book that will make you laugh, cry and potentially blush (!)…..
Shunned and struggling at home and school, teenager Lorna Davies clatters into chaotic and charismatic Shay O’Driscoll and Leon Barrett at an illegal rave in 1995. As Lorna’s talent for dancing sees her unexpectedly employed in the strobe-lit heart of 90’s club culture, her world is turned on its head by her budding friendship with Shay and Leon. For the boys, their high-risk lives endanger all three of them in an association that blurs the lines between friendship and dependency.
As the risks escalate, Lorna’s best friend Hannah, her brother Dan, her bully-turned-protector Nico and her unexpected friend Rosa watch with concern as she is thrust ever closer to harm in an intoxicating new landscape. When life-threatening events threaten to separate them permanently, Lorna, Leon and Shay juggle love, loyalty, sacrifice and exploitation as their lives change beyond recognition. Will the losses they face break them all?

Fifteen year old Lorna is at an illegal rave. but when she’s left by her boyfriend (who’s throwing up!) she bumps into someone that will change her life forever. After hanging with Justin, she’s introduced to two dancers, chaotic Shay and moody Lee; and when they realise she’s got moves, she’s offered an unexpected job with them. As they become friends, what follows is a tangled mess of love, lust, obsession, heartbreak and responsibility.
Her brother and her friends are concerned about her relationship with the boys and the trouble they can get her into. But she’s changing and growing up and she makes her own choices. But will she make the right ones? Will they drag her into her trouble? And what losses will they all need to suffer?
This is another fantastic book from Lucas. It had me thoroughly sucked in from the first chapter, which leaves you hanging on a thread. You go through a tense, emotional, rollercoaster ride with Lorna and then towards the end, see things from one of the other characters viewpoints, which adds a whole new depth to the story.
The characters are fantastic. Lorna is a little fiery, sassy redhead and I love how her characters develops throughout. I was thoroughly invested in her, and felt like she was my friend. I felt proud of her at times, gutted and fuming for her at others, and felt my own need to get revenge at points! Her brother Dan is a legend, and I love Nico – even though he doesn’t always make the right choices. And then there’s Shay and Lee. Ultimate bad boys from a rough estate, they’ve had their own challenged upbringings and have known nothing different than the life they lead. But Lorna opens their eyes and it’s heartwarming to see. But with them comes danger, and there were plenty of moments in here when I was holding my breath, or wanting to give one of them a slap! Although most of the time, I wanted to give them a big hug!
The storyline is brilliant, and I love going back to the 90’s for a bit of nostalgia ~ when she trots off to the phonebox to make a call, it makes me laugh….as do some of their outfits!! There is a lot of sex in this, and it can be pretty descriptive but I feel like it’s an essential part of the story, and the characters stories, so don’t let it put you off.
Reading this was honestly like being there with Lorna. I felt her emotions and her struggle to grow up and to come to terms with things that have happened in the past, and the battles that she’s still facing. This will bring out all your emotions, and I even had a cry at one stage ~ I was devastated!! But there are also so many times that you will laugh out loud ~ I got a fit of the giggles at one point and couldn’t stop laughing!!
Lucas has done another outstanding job and the experience of her job as a social worker shines through in this. Shay and Lee are so misunderstood by many people who don’t know their back story, and this is something that happens every day in the real world.
I said this with the first book, and it’s true again. Lucas’ writing style is thoroughly enjoyable and so easy to read. I loved this so much that it’s hard to find the words, and I literally cannot wait for the next book to come out!! This is definitely recommended by me! If you’re a 70’s or 80’s baby, you definitely need to check this out; and if you want a story that will suck you in, draw out all your emotions, have you in fits of laughter, give you a bit of ‘sauce’ and blow you away, then this is for you!
Absolutely well deserved ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
