Welcome to the Hummingbird Hotel!
When florist-to-the-stars Abbie Coleman catches a glimpse of her boyfriend through the window of Tiffany’s, she couldn’t be more excited. Keen to share her happiness, she organises a huge surprise party for all their family and friends… except things don’t quite work out as she expected, and instead of planning a flower-filled wedding, she finds herself single, and fired from a job she loves.
Desperate to escape her heartbreak, she jets off to her aunt’s quirky Hummingbird Hotel on the gorgeous island of Corfu. Little did she know that instead of spending her time lounging by the pool, drinking cocktails, and soaking up the sun, she’d be stepping into the role of the island’s newest hotelier.
The arrival of unexpected guests sends Abbie into a tailspin of panic, and she’s forced to turn to snippy, but charismatic, vineyard owner-turned-chef, Nikos Angelopoulos, for help. Why does the kitchen fill with smoke whenever she makes coffee? Why is there a naked man swimming in the pool? And why do the hotel’s toiletries turn their guests’ hair pink?
Despite all the chaos, the Hummingbird Hotel works its magic on Abbie, and she finds herself with a decision to make. Will she return home to the drizzly grey skies of London? Or will she take a leap of faith and embrace the new opportunities that little corner of paradise has to offer, and maybe, just maybe, discover a sprinkle of romance along the way?
Abbie is excited when she thinks her boyfriend is set to propose and secretly arranges for their closest friends to be at the venue in anticipation. But she couldn’t have been more wrong and ends up not only embarrassed, but single and jobless too. As her and her best friend Em talk about her dreams, Em encourages her to call her estranged Aunt’s lawyer who supposedly left her something in her will.
What she didn’t expect was to be given a hotel in Corfu! Determined to sell up and move on with her life, she heads over to sort out the paperwork. But during the 10 days she’s there, she has a group of guests arriving and it’s too late to cancel…. And from then onwards hilarious disaster follows hilarious disaster and Abbie has to get the help of handsome neighbour Nikos on more than one occasion, as he turns out to be her knight in shining armour.
As the days pass by, she enjoys her time and makes some amazing friends but with her flight due back to the UK it’s time to sign the paperwork on the sale of the hotel and move on. But she realises that her decision will not only impact her, but all the wonderful friends she’s just made. Will she sell up and go home? Or will she be brave and take a leap into something new? And what will become of her and Nikos?
I absolutely loved this and can’t wait for the next one! The characters are fantastic, the storyline heartwarming and hilarious, the setting is absolutely gorgeous and the writing style easy and enjoyable.
Abbie is a brilliant character. She takes you on such an emotional journey with her as she deals with things in the present and the past, and you will just want things to go well for her. Her best friend Em is a diamond, and I hope we’ll see more of her in future books. Nikos is, at first, not the most charming person but he has his reasons and you will eventually love him. And the rest of the cast of supporting characters are all brilliant and I can’t wait to get back with them all. The community spirit is heartwarming and so lovely.
The setting made me really want to go on holiday! The Hummingbird Hotel sounds absolutely idyllic. I love nothing more than peace, quiet and tranquility and the hotel and it’s surroundings oozes this! Daisy does such a wonderful job of describing the setting that she fully enables you to bring it all to life – I just wish we were getting some more of that sunshine in the UK right now!
I loved the storyline – there’s heartbreak, mysteries, romance and plenty of funny. moments that will have you laughing out loud. This is the perfect summer read and if you’re lucky enough to be going abroad, or even having a staycation in the sunshine, then this is a perfect novel to escape with. Highly recommended by me. Bring on book 2!
about the author
Daisy James loves writing stories with strong heroines and swift-flowing plotlines. She especially likes to create sunshine-filled settings in exotic locations – the Caribbean, Tuscany, Cornwall, Provence – so she can spend her time envisioning her characters enjoying the fabulous scenery and sampling the local food and drink.
When not scribbling away in her peppermint-and-green summerhouse (garden shed), she spends her time sifting flour and sprinkling sugar and edible glitter. She loves gossiping with friends over a glass of something fizzy or indulging in a spot of afternoon tea – china plates and teacups are a must.
