Alex doesn’t believe in ghosts, but he is about to have his beliefs challenged…
When Jimmy Devlin asks the twins to investigate the strange things that have been happening at The Priory, Alex seizes the opportunity to prove to his sister that there is no such thing as ghosts. However, it soon becomes clear that unquiet spirits are not the only problem facing the Devlin family.
Are the family servants hiding secrets? Has a valuable ring been stolen, or just mislaid? And what has happened to Jimmy’s missing elder brother, Harry? As the twins and Jimmy try to solve the many mysteries of The Priory, they discover they are dealing with a very dangerous enemy…
When Alex and Donna spot one of their old friends roll up to school in a Rolls Royce, they’re intrigued. And then they find out that after a lottery win, Jimmy now lives in The Priory – and that he believes they may have a ghost. Excited about the prospect of a ghost hunt, they arrange a sleepover in the hope that Alex can disprove the theory of ghosts being real….
But they soon realise that there is more going on at the Priory that they first thought, and with their keen investigative eye, they set out on explore the happenings. But they need to be careful as sometimes the living are more dangerous than the dead…..
This is a brilliant mystery aimed at those aged between 9 and 12. Alex and Donna are amateur sleuths and have even set up their own little detective agency, so are excited to delve into an investigation again. As an adult, I was amazed at the things that these 13 year old thought about doing! But I’m sure for older children that this would captivate them and draw them in.
The storyline was engaging, the characters likeable and the setting creepy – exactly what you want in a ghost story. There are a few strands of mystery that keeps the reader engaged and wanting to see what will happen next. There’s also lots of things that children will be able to identify with and relate to – homework, school, moany parents and even bullying.
The writing style is clear, easy and enjoyable to read. I definitely think this is the sort of thing I would have liked at that age so will happily recommend this! I’d love to read more from this author, as well as the rest of the series!
about the author
Tessa Buckley was an inveterate scribbler as a child, and spent much of her time writing and illustrating stories. After studying Interior Design, she spent fifteen years working for architects and designers. She took up writing again after her young daughter complained that she couldn’t find enough adventure stories to read. This led, in 2016, to the publication of Eye Spy, the first in a series of detective stories for 9-12 year olds, designed to encourage reluctant readers. The second book in the series, Haunted, was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2017.
Tessa lives with her husband and a large white cat called Pippa. in a town on the Thames estuary, which inspired the seaside setting for the novels. She also writes about health and nutrition, and family history, which has been her passion for many years.
