I’m delighted today to be on the blog tour of HIM by Clare Empson……an absolutely fantastic debut novel.
‘You’re stuck there, aren’t you? Right at the end. And I wonder if it might help to go back to the beginning, to put everything in some kind of order.’
Catherine has witnessed something so traumatic that she can’t speak. Or won’t speak. The doctors say the only way forward is to look into her past.
Catherine needs to start with HIM .
Fifteen years ago she met Lucian at university and fell into a passionate love affair. They were meant to be together forever. But something happened. Something that destroyed them.
Catherine married someone else. Had two children. She moved on – or so she thought. Now Lucian is back, showing her how different life could have been.
But going back to the beginning won’t change the ending.
In fact, it might be the thing that finally breaks her…

What a debut! This book was absolutely fantastic, and another one that had me gripped from beginning to end.
The story alternates between Catherine in the present, 4 months ago and 15 years ago; and also from Lucian’s point of view 4 months ago. In the present Catherine has Elective Mutism following a trauma….. but what caused it?
We follow Catherine’s story as she meets and falls hopelessly in love with Lucian (15 years ago)….even though she is nearly in a relationship with Sam. But in the present she’s married to Sam……. So what happened to this all-consuming love affair? Why did she suddenly leave him? What happened? And what happened 4 months ago to make them reunite? In a story like this there are dark secrets and lies that need to be hidden and need to be uncovered……
I was so sucked in to this story, all the way through I was just really hoping that they would end up together. Catherine has obviously always been in love with Lucian so why did she marry Sam?
I could honestly feel the heartbreak throughout this whole story, truly wanting a happy ending…..but is that possible? You’ll have to read it to find out!
This is a fantastic debut by Empson. Truly well written, easy to read, thoroughly gripping and enjoyable. You’ll be sucked in with this obsessive love story and ‘Made in Chelsea’ type lifestyle of some of these characters. This was a hard hitting and brilliant story, and I can’t wait to read more from Empson. Highly recommended by me!
