Morning everyone! I hope you’re all having a good week so far.  Today I’ve got a book review for you. Incandescence by Elena Leman is a fantastic, and very steamy, romantic fantasy with a brilliant storyline and wonderful characters….

about incandescence…

“In thousands of years of my astral travels, I’d never needed a companion. But he found a way to ingrain himself in my every brain cell, my every goosebump, my every trembling breath… His darkness is the answer to my light.”

Orobella is a cosmic wanderer, living borrowed lives in borrowed bodies. Her mission on planet Instaar is the same as always—collecting Crystals of Emotions while having as much fun as her new physical form allows, no strings attached. But once she meets the hypnotically mysterious Sambor, both her body and soul yearn for more. She makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

In the world where creatures of death and darkness drive men mad, emotional detachment has been Sambor’s greatest life achievement. As the future leader of the Lasota tribe and a spiritual tattoo artist, he can’t afford the luxury of mental weakness. Yet his meticulously constructed equilibrium is shaken up when an alluring nymph promises to save his baby sister, in exchange for a sacred Lasota tattoo. He can’t say no. Even if that means his demons will get the best of him.

Steeped in mysticism, elemental magic, and sensual vibrations, this romantic fantasy is more than a love story. It’s a journey through a soul.

my thoughts

When Orobella finds herself on Planet Instaar, she sets off on her usual mission to collect Crystals of Emotions – her job as a Crystellian.  But what she doesn’t expect is for her ‘life’ to get entangled with a handsome, brooding tribe leader to be, Sambor and his family.  Her mission is thrown up in the air and tough decisions need to be made….but will she make the right one?

I’ve got to be honest – I struggled with this book at first.  There is a lot of graphic sex in the first half and (as any of my readers will know), I’m not a huge fan of sex scenes (they make me cringe!). But I was determined to not be put off (and just skimmed the cringey bits!), and I’m glad I perservered.  Because the rest of the story is wonderful.

Full of mysticism, legend, strong warrior men, healers, mythical green women, crystals, emotions, and magic I was drawn into this fantastical storyline.  Unlike anything I’ve read before, I loved the idea that higher ascended light ‘beings’ were going to the planet to swap and collect crystals.  With 33 emotions to collect, Orobella swaps her main crystal emotion, JOY for friendship, loyalty, and many many more. The overall plot is so original and thoroughly enjoyable.

The characters were all fantastic, although I did have mixed feelings for Orobella.  I adored Sambor even if he does come across dark and miserable to start with!  Child, Sambors sister with no name yet, was an absolute treasure and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her develop.  And I loved Smoku!

Leman’s descriptions are fantastic, and really helped me to imagine exactly what was going on, which is so important in a fantasy novel!  She does a brilliant job of making it come alive and play out in full colour for you.

Overall, putting the sex scenes aside, I absolutely loved this.  In the first half of the book I was verging on giving this 3*s but actually, having read and got completely sucked into the brilliant second half it definitely deserves more.  So if you don’t mind some graphic and steamy sex scenes, and are looking for an original, gripping, intriguing and magical fantasy then this could be for you!  I’m actually really looking forward to book 2!
