Good morning friends – I hope you’re all preparing for a good day ahead.  Today I’m delighted to bring you a review of Kia the Empath, the third book in The Wand Chronicles by Michael Ross.  I was so excited to be back with some of my favourite characters, and I wasn’t disappointed…….

the blurb

Kia is half-human, half-elf and the most powerful empath in the cosmos. Her destiny has already been written. She has to confront the warring factions pouring through the portals on the elvish dimension of Laniakeea. Her challenges seem insurmountable. Having a finger amputated by the Krandokrall, facing up to a sorcerer of immense magical power and masterminding the greatest battle to have ever taken place.

Will Elvina the wand help her?

Will her human instincts let her down?

Will she be victorious or will she die trying?

The answers balance on a knife-edge.

my review

We’re back in Laniakeea, but many years after book 2.  Kia, Allana and Hugo’s daughter, is now a teenager – and although half human, half elf she is definitely experiencing teenage hormones!  But at the same time she is one of the most powerful Empath’s and has a special bond with Elvina, the wand.  This book takes us on many perilous adventures with Kia, big and small, as we meet some of the other species that will be a critical part of what is coming towards the end……

It was great to be back with the characters from the previous books; notably Allana, Hugo, Kia, Queen Haruntha, Elfistra, Mandaz and Ding Ling (of course!) to see where they are and what they’ve been up to. But we’re also back with some of the less desirable characters ~ one I completely didn’t expect (!); as well as meeting some fantastic new ones.

In this, Kia gets herself in to some sticky situations (losing a finger in the process!), venturing to other dimensions and taking on some of the most powerful beings, but is also super brave and uses her power to help others and save their dimensions.  The chapters take us on lots of mini adventures, with each one either bringing back a character or introducing us to a new species.  It’s amazing the way the Elves of Laniakeea can win so many people over and accept them – but it’s definitely beneficial to them when Laniakeea finds itself in the midst of a battle……(which will have you holding your breath!)

Michael Ross has an absolutely amazing imagination.  The creatures, dimensions, people and scenario’s in this are out of this world; and his descriptions allow you to really see what’s happening.   With each chapter there is an illustration of a character or scene, which is also really helps to bring the book to life.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again; the affirmations that are presented at the beginning of each chapter in Elvish script (but translated for us to understand) are fantastic, and I love them. There are some real nuggets of wisdom in these, and are aspects which we should all think about and consider in our daily lives.

It’s also worth noting the humour throughout this book.  There are so many bits that will make you chuckle and some of the things Ding Ling comes out with made me laugh and cringe at the same time!!

As well as the illustrations and affirmations at the beginning of the chapters, Michael offers us a map of Laniakeea, a glossary and, importantly, phonetic pronunciations of some of the terms – which is so important in a fantasy novel.  I found these so helpful, and regularly referred to it if I wasn’t sure if I was getting things right!

This is a brilliant epic fantasy that will suck you in to the amazing worlds, but at the same time offers some reality bites throughout.  There are many messages in this that remind us to be kind, not to judge, to forgive and to love ourselves; as well as to look after the planet we are lucky enough to live on.  There are so many thoroughly important messages weaved intricately throughout the book.

If you’re looking for the next epic fantasy that will take you on lots of brilliant adventures, make you chuckle, introduce you to some fabulous characters and species, and keep you engrossed then you should definitely check this series out!
