What a fabulous debut from a talented new author. From page one I was sucked in to this suspenseful psychological thriller and didn’t want to put it down. At one point I thought I’d sussed it all out, but couldn’t have been more wrong!!
The plot is brilliant; a tangled web of dysfunctional families and dark secrets. Campbell keeps up the suspense fantastically throughout the story, always keeping me on my toes. The story unravels at just the right pace and the twists were brilliant. There were a few unanswered questions for me but then I’m one of these people that likes everything to be tied off nicely!
There are a good mix of characters in this. Some you will love, some you will hate. Eva, our main protagonist, has had a rough upbringing in foster care and finds it hard to forgive her Mother. But with her baby needing her to be strong, she bites the bullet and does the things she never thought she would. Her Husband Jim was a bit of mixed bag for me. He’s so caring and lovely, but spends so much time away for work. He frustrated me at times with his dedication to work, especially when his baby arrived early. Ben, Emmy and Gill are all fantastic characters, I feel like we all need a Gill in our lives! And then the parents…..I will let you make your own decisions!
The story covers a number of things throughout, including the birth of preemie Joe which I have to say was covered fantastically. Our Granddaughter was born early and reading Joe’s journey in NICU and SCBU bought back many memories. The tangled story of family secrets was brilliant, as was Campbells portrayal of many a dysfunctional family. It also covers mental health issues with a number of the characters, including depression and anxiety.
Watching Eva and Ben develop as they learned more about their past was heartwarming; but then at the other end of the scale, the changes to a number of the characters are heart wrenching. This will definitely give you all the feels.
Overall, I think this is a wonderful debut. Suspenseful and gripping with some fabulous twists, if you’re looking for your next psychological thriller then check this out. If you run a book club this is fantastic book to read, with discussion questions included at the end. Leave Well Alone is definitely recommended by me! I can’t wait to read whatever comes next from Campbell!
about the author
Until the birth of her twins in 2005, which radically changed her life, AJ was an accountant for several investment banks in London. One of her twins was born with severe disabilities, as a result of which she had to give up work to care for him. It was during this incredibly challenging (and rewarding) time that AJ began to draw on her love of the written word, partly for day-to-day inspiration and partly for her own mental health. She started writing her debut novel, Leave Well Alone, and then enrolled in several creative writing courses with the Faber Academy where she progressed with her writing career.
AJ lives on the Essex / Hertfordshire border with her husband and three sons and splits her time between caring for her son and family and writing.
