Today on Meet the Author we’re talking to the lovely Amelia Hendrey, a fellow crazy cat lady and survivor.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m a town girl who now lives in the country, I’m officially the crazy cat lady, I have 7 cats ( it was 10) and as well as being an author I have my own cat sitting business.
What inspired you to start writing?
My husband: He said I have lived more lives than one person should have so I should write it all down and share it with the world. He said it could help other victims/survivors who have been through something similar or educate people who are unaware of what goes on behind closed doors.
How many books have you written and published?
One. But am currently writing two others
Who is your favourite author and which of their books is your favourite, and why?
B.A. Paris. Her book Behind Closed Doors grabbed me and sucked me in and kept me there on the edge of my seat. It’s the only book I have read more than once.
What other jobs have you done other than being an author?
Builders labourer, barmaid, personal shopper in a warehouse where I used to have to get up at 3.30am in order to start work at 4.30am. Being an author has been the most glamorous.
If you could get in a time machine and had one chance to travel, where would you go? (Backwards or forwards!)
Defiantly backwards. My life has been full of bad decisions, bad choices and bad judgement.
If you could have one conversation with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
It would be Roald Dahl, I would ask him where he got the inspiration for the characters he wrote about.
What are your favourite things to do?
I love watching films/tv series. I’m a sucker for Netflix.
What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
Kathy Burke wished me Happy Birthday on Twitter.
If you could give your younger writing self any advice what would it be?
Write down everything, anything that means anything to you, anything that’s funny, important. Just write
Name one book you think everyone should read?!
Behind Closed Doors
And finally, tell us about your most recent book and where we can find it?
What Nobody Knew is the story of my life, throughout the book are genuine social services documents, a police interview and conviction which has never been done before.
My story begins aged 3, when my mother abandoned me and left my brutal father to raise me.
Nobody knew the secrets that went on inside that house, or the journey that I travelled on after leaving it, until now. This is the story of my survival.
What do you do when no one wants you?
How many people need to destroy a child until that child wants to destroy herself?
What if social services always got told a different story?
What if I showed you both sides of that story?
What would you do if you were in my position?
Survival is key.
Where to buy:
Thank you so much Amelia for taking part. It sounds like your book is the story of an incredibly strong person and ultimate survivor, and I love that your a crazy cat lady too!
