Morning lovelies! I can’t believe it’s nearly Christmas – I hope you’re all ready and looking forward to it as much as possible!  Today I’m delighted to chat to Heleyne Hammersley on Meet the Author; our last interview before the big day!  We’re talking about inspiration, what she loves doing other than writing, what the name of the film about her life would be, her most recent book, Reunion and more…..

Genre(s):

Psychological fiction/crime

What inspired you to start writing and where do you get your ideas?

I’ve always written.  When I was very young, I used to turn poems into stories and stories into poems.  As I got older, I started writing longer pieces and eventually managed a (never to be published) novel.  My ideas come from things I see and hear every day.  They also come from my past, as I like to blend past and present in my police procedural novels.

How many books have you written and published?

I’ve written seven books.  Six are published by Bloodhound Books and the seventh will be out in March next year – also with Bloodhound.  I’ve written a series of police procedurals – the DI Kate Fletcher series – and three standalone novels.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Around nine months to get it to a point where I’m ready to send it to a publisher.  I’ve sped up a bit this year due to having no other work and managed a first draft in five months, but it might take a lot of editing!

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I honestly wanted to be a writer.  I had brief flirtations with circus ringmaster and vet but I always wanted to write stories.

What other jobs have you done other than being an author?

I still work part time as a supply teacher.  I was a full time English teacher for many years but now I only work a few days a month. I’ve also recently started online tutoring which means I can work from home and have more time for writing.

If you could get in a time machine and had one chance to travel, where would you go and why? (Backwards or forwards!)

Backwards!  I’m hugely interested in archaeology and nearly opted to study it at university.  I’d love to be able to go back in time and solve some of the big mysteries of ancient history.

Other than writing, what else do you enjoy doing?

I’m a keen hill walker which is why I moved to Cumbria.  I love being out in the hills in all seasons and weathers. I got an electric bike last year and it’s rekindled my love of cycling.

I read a lot and watch a lot of films.

Oh, and gin.

What is the best thing you’ve done in your life so far?

In 2001 my partner and I gave up our jobs and went travelling for a year.  We went to China, south-east Asia, New Zealand, India and Eastern Europe.  I still can’t believe some of the things I’ve been lucky enough to see and experience.  Angkor Wat at dawn on Christmas Day, a walk along the Great Wall of China, the dark forests of Romania.  It was a truly incredible year.

If a movie was made about your life, what genre would it be, who would you want to play you and what would its title be?

A comedy starring Sarah Lancashire called ‘What the Actual F***?’

And finally, tell us about your most recent book and where we can find it?

My most recent book is ‘Reunion’ the fourth in the DI Kate Fletcher series.  It’s available on Amazon Kindle.

Do you REALLY trust your friends?

It all starts with a reunion….

When two bodies are discovered over a hundred miles apart the most obvious link appears to be DI Kate Fletcher, but, as Kate’s team investigate, a more sinister connection develops – one firmly rooted in the past.

The discovery of another victim confirms Kate’s suspicion that this is a murdered with a clear agenda.  All the evidence leads back to Thorpe – Kate’s childhood home – and the events of what should have been an idyllic summer more than thirty years ago.

As Kate starts to unravel the complex web, she realises the answer might lie in the links between the victims; specific individuals are being targeted.

Can the killer be stopped in time to save the final person on the list?
