Once Upon A Crime…

Nancy Hunter and her grandmother Jane Hunter run the Dedley Endings Bookshop, selling crime, thriller and mystery books, in a small, quiet Cotswold village where nothing ever happens…

That is, until the wealthy and reclusive Roth family open up their mansion for the first time in twenty years, inviting the people of Dedley End to a lavish engagement party.

While everyone is thrilled to finally look around the mansion on the hill, the festivities are quickly cut short when beautiful Lucy, recently married to young Harry Roth, is found dead after being pushed over the first-floor balustrade.

But who among the guests could have been capable of her murder – and why?

Nancy and Jane decide to investigate – after all, not only do they own a crime themed bookshop, they were also both named after famous literary detectives – but soon wonder if they’ve taken on more than they can handle. Especially when it seems the killer has worked out that they’re hot on their heels…

Can they catch the murderer before the murderer catches up with them? Or will there be a deadly ending to this story?

Join the unlikeliest detective duo for the killer opener of The Dedley End Mysteries series, by a major voice in women’s fiction.

my thoughts

Nancy and her Grandmother Jane are excited when they’re invited to an engagement party up at the House on the Hill, a place that has been closed to the village, and public for nearly 20 years.  But the party doesn’t turn out as planned…..when one of the guests dies.  The victim is a new member of the Roth family, but why would anyone kill her? Nancy and Jane own and run a crime bookshop in the village and Nancy’s best friend Jonathan, bets them £50 that they won’t be able to solve the case before the police…..and obviously they can’t let that go! Determined to uncover the truth, Nancy manages to worm her way into the family home but as she learns more about the family, secrets start to reveal themselves.  And as she gets closer to the truth, her life could be in danger…….

I thoroughly enjoyed this! It is super cosy, has a fantastic cast of characters, a wonderful setting and a superb plot.  It kept me reading from the very beginning and having finished it, I’m already wishing the next book was out so I could get my next fix!

In terms of characters, Nancy is brilliant.  She’s a strong independent female, and although some things try to challenge that, she sticks to her guns!  Jane is brilliant and I love the way she gets herself involved in the mischief too!  Jonathan is also fab, he’s a bit of a lad but he definitely has feelings hidden away for a certain someone.  I just hope the two of them get together at some point!!

I loved the little village and the fact that it’s called Dedley End doesn’t fill you with much hope! I think it might be the next Midsommer!!  The community within the village makes you want to be there, and as this is set around Christmas time, the lights and festivities make it even more cosy – roaring fires, snow, mulled wine, Christmas markets, and more! This has made me so excited that we’re finally getting towards that time of year!

I really enjoyed the plot.  It kept me hanging on and I am convinced I suspected pretty much everyone at some point.  The suspense and mystery will keep you reading till the end, and I’m pretty sure you’ll be surprised with the ending….I certainly was!

So overall, an absolutely fantastic cosy crime mystery with a stellar cast, gorgeous setting and suspenseful and gripping plot.  So if you’re looking for your next cosy crime/mystery then you need to check this out.  Highly recommended by me.
