about of magpies and men
Can any good come of longings that a person can never satisfy? If so, good for whom?
Two corpses wash ashore in a picturesque Italian village, the violence that put them there is bound to a long-held secret and two strangers living worlds apart with seemingly nothing in common.
Benedict Grant a wealthy Londoner, leading a lonely life.
Marie Boulanger a nurse and single mum, struggling to make ends meet in Marseille.
However, a mother’s illicit revelation will set in motion a chain of events that will reshape their identities, stir poignant family affairs and delve into the by-products of lawless decisions.
With this domestic thriller, discover a captivating and moving story of impossible yearnings, weaving mystery and drama peppered with humour. A tale that will stay with you long after its final page and a twist you won’t see coming.
For once I’m not going to go into the story as this is a fabulous book where the story comes together like a puzzle and I don’t want to give anything away for anyone!
The chapters flit from one character to another and span across quite a wide timescale. It sounds confusing but it’s not at all. It’s really easy to follow and seeing the story unfold is so enjoyable and rewarding.
The two main characters Benedict and Marie couldn’t be more different. Benedict is from a well off background, has a high powered, well paid job in London and hangs around in high powered social circles. But he has his own secrets….. Marie is a kind, caring and loving mother who works hard for her son, Romain. Coming from a pretty abusive and poor background, she is grateful for what she has and everything she does is for Romain. I loved Marie from the start but it took me a while to warm to Benedict – and when you read this you will understand why. But the more I got to know him, the more I liked him. You will just want the best for both of them……
The settings couldn’t be more different. Benedict and Marie’s lives are so different and the author gets this across perfectly in the book.
The mystery in this is brilliant and will be the thing that keeps you turning pages. There was so much I wanted to find out, and so many questions I had that at times I didn’t want to put it down. When I thought I’d sussed something out I was wrong, and then there are the twists which will blow you away. There is one killer twist that completely got me – I was not expecting it at all!
Overall, this is a brilliant story full of mystery and intrigue. If you enjoy a domestic thriller and want something that will keep you turning the pages, then check this out. Recommended by me.
