A semi-inflated football and a curious little girl.
They called it peacekeeping. For Corporal Lindsey Ryan it was anything but.
It’s been three years since that bright day in the Golan Heights and the explosion which killed two and changed the survivors forever.
Now Lindsey deals with the many problems of the city’s troubled youth, to distract her from her own. But as damp days turn to night the kids return home, or somewhere like it, and she returns to her own private war. One that exists solely for her.
Certain that she’s being watched and certain that she’s losing her mind, Lindsey battles with the demons of post traumatic stress, while a very real threat edges ever closer until she finds herself face to face with someone who wants nothing more than to finally help her to die.
And it’s the last person she ever could have seen coming.
Blue helmets and blurred lines – While Nobody is Watching delves into the dark world of PTSD and a battle scarred soldier struggling to find a place in her new world.
q&A with Michelle Dunne
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I grew up in the harbour town of Cobh, Co Cork, where I stayed until I joined the Irish army at the age of 18. During my time in the defence forces I went from recruit, to infantry soldier, to UN Peacekeeper in Lebanon, to instructor back in Ireland and loved every minute. I’m living back in Cobh now with my husband Dominic and my 3 year old daughter, Emily. The Lindsey Ryan series was inspired by my time in the army and the types of relationships that form within its ranks. While Nobody Is Watching is the first book in the series and was published by BADPRESSiNK (UK) and was recently released in the USA by Polis Books. The following-up book, The Invisible is due out later in 2021.
What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always loved writing! During my school years, if we were asked to write a 2 page essay, mine would always be closer to 5, no matter what topic was given. I’ve always had stories to tell and it felt therapeutic to put them on paper. That just continued throughout my life. I started writing my first novel around 2007 and I feel I have many more left to write.
How many books have you written and published?
I’ve had 3 books published, with a fourth on the way later this year. My fifth is a work in progress.
Which book, out of all the books you have written, is your favourite and why?
While Nobody Is Watching is my current favourite, because I adore the character, Lindsey Ryan. She doesn’t fit any stereotype as far as female characters go. That said, I’m really excited about the follow-up Lindsey Ryan book, for the same reason!
How do you choose the names of your characters?
I actually don’t give much thought to the names if I’m honest. When I start writing, the names just land on the page. It’s like I’m being introduced to someone new; this is their name. They’ve always had it and I don’t have a say! I’m not sure if that makes sense, but not much about my writing process makes sense!
Which of your characters would you want to be stranded on an island with, and why?
Definitely Lindsey Ryan! She’s much better at DIY than I am. I’m sure we’d survive!
Who is your favourite author and which of their books is your favourite, and why?
I actually couldn’t pick a favourite author because the types of books I read totally depends on what mood I’m in. For example if I’m looking to get sucked into a good thriller, I love Karin Slaughter and I really liked Cop Town by her. Or if I want something lighter, I love Cathy Kelly or Marian Keyes – If I had to pick one of Cathy’s, I loved The Year That Changed Everything and Rachel’s Holiday by Marian. My list of authors that I love is just too long!
What other jobs have you done other than being an author?
I was a soldier, Peacekeeper and more recently, a physical therapist.
What are your favourite things to do?
I love anything outdoorsy – hiking around the mountains of Ireland, running, walking country or forest trails. I love spending time with my daughter too. She’s great company!
If you could give your younger writing self any advice what would it be?
Keep going!! It will all be worth it. A remember why you write!
Name one book you think everyone should read?!
I really struggle with questions that ask me to pick one … especially when it comes to books. I never can!
And finally, tell us about your most recent book and where we can find it?
While Nobody Is Watching tells the story of Corporal Lindsey Ryan, a veteran of the Irish army and UN Peacekeeping forces, now living a new life with a new career mentoring the troubled youth of Cork city while also dealing with PTSD and all it can throw at her. How she deals with it, is by throwing herself into the lives of the very troubled young people that she works with and by putting herself in some very dangerous situations. Her new, high risk lifestyle has also attracted the attention of a stalker. And it’s the last person she every could have imagined. While Nobody Is Watching takes a look at the dark world of PTSD and a former soldier struggling to find her place in her new world.
Thanks so much to Rachel for inviting me on to the tour, and to Michelle for chatting with us!
