I promised last week that I’d be posting weekly; a summary of my week, how I’ve been feeling and what I’ve been up to in the world of self-care.  I’m a day late but I’ve spent all weekend researching for my upcoming essay so I’ll forgive myself this once!

So this week I’ve been feeling OK.  The main struggle I’ve had is feeling REALLY anxious when I wake up in the morning – shaking and having that horrible feeling in my chest.  It tends to wear off after a little while but I feel like I have to give myself a little kick to get started.  Does anyone else struggle with this? I’d love to hear from you and how you manage it.

Other than that though, it’s been an OK week.  I’ve been putting LOTS of small steps in to try and help myself this week:

–   No alcohol

–   Meditation

–   Yoga

–   #blurtselfcareathon

No alcohol

So the no alcohol thing actually started the week before last.  After my meltdown I decided I really need to lay off the wine (not that I was heavily drinking but was having drinks every weekend) so am taking each week as it comes.  I actually do feel much better for it.  I’ve had good sleep the last 2 weekends, and have felt much better in the mornings.  Plus, a bonus point is that I lost 4lbs in the first week!

I’ve downloaded the Headspace app and have been doing the basics course.  Today I’ll be on day 7.  I’ve tried meditating before but haven’t ever been great at it, although this time I’m really enjoying it and really getting into it.  I’ve only been doing 5-10 minutes per day, about an hour before going to bed to wind me down but I’m finding it much easier this time, and feel so relaxed afterwards. The only problem is, I think you have to pay for the Headspace app eventually (which I can’t afford) so any recommendations for great (easy!) meditation apps would be great!

Previously I don’t think I ever thought much of yoga.  I’d tried it a couple of times when I was a gym bunny but didn’t feel like it was doing anything!  I know I need to start exercising more so thought I’d start with something that seems like it might also help my mental health; and I have to say I’m loving it!  My friend recommended 30 days of Yoga with Adriene on YouTube so I thought I’d give it a go.  Again, I’m REALLY enjoying taking some time out for ME.  Today will be day 6 and so far the sessions have been between 15-30 minutes which is DO-ABLE! I’ve found it really relaxing, but also quite hard in places! I ached for the first 2 days!!If you’ve never tried it and fancy taking up something that you can do in the privacy of your own home, I would definitely recommend trying it.  I find Adriene quite funny so look forward to my little bit of ‘me’ time every day, knowing that it’s good for me both physically and mentally.

And lastly, the other thing I’ve been taking part in is the Blurt selfcareathon on Instagram.  Blurt are a FAB organisation that I’ve recently found, founded by a lovely lady, Jayne Hardy who has struggled with depression throughout her life.  The website has so much good advice on there, I’d definitely recommend checking it out.  Anyway, the selfcareathon is encouraging us to do post something each day through April, related to mental health.  I was late getting to the party so started on Day 12 (Animals of course!) and am enjoying taking part each day.  Check out what people have been posting on Instagram using #blurtselfcareathon.

So as you can see, I’ve had a relatively good week and am really trying hard to help myself out a bit.  Let me know how you’ve been feeling this week and what you’ve been up to.

Bye for now lovelies

Chelle xx
