my review….

This is a wonderful trilogy about growth, love, loyalty (often mis-placed!), betrayal, family and second chances.  I’m glad that I had boxset to read so I could keep up with Jess’ growth from a teenage to adulthood….it would have driven me mad if I’d had to wait for the next book!

In the first book, Drumbeats, we meet Jess as she battles with her parents to go to Africa for a year  before starting uni, with a view to helping the locals and making a difference.  She experiences things that others her age back home wouldn’t understand and develops some beautiful relationships whilst she’s there.  She’s goes through a lot; all the time trying to maintain her relationship at home with her boyfriend, Simon……

In book 2, we’re back with Jess after she returns home from Africa.  We journey with her through her final years at uni, growing up, getting married and becoming a wife and mother.  But we also experience the horrific things she goes through.  I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that made me so angry!  Jess is a lovely, thoughtful, caring person and definitely doesn’t deserve the way she is treated by various people.  I was fuming for her throughout the book and just wanted to protect her!

In the final book, Jess is recovering emotionally from the betrayal and trying to make sense of everything, as well as trying to build the best life for her daughters, but the poor woman never has it easy!  Throughout the beginning of the book, again I was so angry for her! I don’t understand how the people she cared about could be so mean!  But then we come to second part of the book which made me smile and happy :). Does Jess end up with a happily ever after that is thoroughly deserved? You’ll have to read these books to find out!

The characters in this book really did bring out strong feelings for me.  As I say, I absolutely love Jess and wanted to protect her so much.  I love Jim, he’s amazing and someone I’m sure we’d all love to meet.  Simon…..I have no polite words to say, and I’m not giving anything away by mentioning any others! Other than the fact that there are so many that I ended up disliking immensely, and some of them are people you wouldn’t expect!

All the books can be read as a standalone, although I would definitely recommend reading them all.  The only thing I will say, is that each book relives some of the Jess’ memories so there are some repeat sections from the earlier books.  It didn’t put me off as I skimmed over them but worth noting if you are planning on reading them in quick succession.

This really is a beautiful story, told across the three books which most definitely come recommended from me!
