My second post of the day is a review on the blog tour of The House Party by Mary Grand, a brilliant psychological thriller that kept me guessing…..
book blurb & info
Someone is about to die… Someone is about to lie…
At the intimate house-warming party for her glorious ‘grand design’, Kathleen confides in her best friend Beth that she is terrified of one of their close friends, but daren’t reveal which one. The guests are a tight-knit group, but Kathleen is convinced one of them is dangerous.
The next day Kathleen’s body is found at the foot of a cliff and Beth must face the sickening truth that she may have been killed by one of their trusted friends. With little help from the police, Beth’s decides to seek answers.
All the friends have secrets they are desperate to hide, but only one of them is ready to kill to keep theirs safe…
The House Party is set on the Isle of Wight – insular, claustrophobic, and with nowhere to run. Mary Grand has written a heart-stopping novel of secrets, betrayal and desire, perfect for fans of Louise Candlish and Lucy Foley.

Celebrating at her house-warming party, Kathleen isn’t herself and confides in Beth that she’s scared of one of their friends, someone at the party. She promises to tell her what’s going on after yoga in a few times time….but she doesn’t live that long. The next day Kathleen is found at the bottom of a cliff, deemed an accident. But Beth knows there must be more to it, especially following Kathleen’s revelation. Despite a warning from her Husband to keep quiet and not go meddling, Beth can’t help but start looking into their friends – and the more she does the more secrets she starts to uncover. But one of them is prepared to kill to keep their secret safe – but who? And will Beth be able to uncover the truth before her time is up?
This is a brilliant psychological thriller that kept me guessing right until the end. The fact that it could be any of their friends keeps you on your toes, and Grand does a fantastic job of raising your suspicions against everyone! I literally thought it was every single one of them at some point, and still didn’t have a clue who it really was as I came towards the end of the book!
The characters are all likeable at first, but then as you discover things about them your opinions might change; mine were certainly all over the place!! Beth is an incredible strong lady; despite what she goes through she perseveres and puts herself in some potentially dangerous situations – all so she can find out the truth for her dead friend. And some of the truths she learns about her friends, changes what she thinks and makes her question whether she truly knows anyone…..
The storyline was gripping and enjoyable, and I just wanted to keep reading to see what the conclusion would be. The setting was also fantastic and I enjoyed the characters walks and cliff views.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and was completely sucked in to the story. If you’re looking for a psychological thriller that will slowly unravel, but keep you hooked then you should check this out. Recommended by me! I look forward to reading more from this author.
