Happy Monday! Today I’m bringing you some exclusive content ‘Contemplating the Future’ on the blog tour for The Jumble Sale by Lily Rose…
Zadi is partzombie, partfairy with a little bit of robot, which makes her a misfit monster. She lives with other misfit monsters, with their quirky parts in their makeshift town. They survive by hunting at the nearby hunting grounds taking items discarded by humans and making them into something useful. Hunting is risky because they could be captured by humans. Zadi is an excellenthunter and maker, but now she’s finding it difficult.
Something unusual has happened. There have been no new deliveries to the hunting grounds. This means there are no new items which can be used to recycle into something useful, and they are beginning to worry and fight with each other.
Can Zadi come up with a plan which will help the misfit monsters and bring them together as a community?
Enter the world of the misfit monsters, their quirky lives, and be part of their fun and adventures.
Contemplating the Future – by lily rose
Now this title does seem rather intense. Don’t get scared off by it. I’m using it as an example of my thought process when playing around with story ideas in my head. When I’m building a new world to write about, one of the perspectives I think about, is the future, and what would it look like. It helps to generate some ideas, gets the creative juices flowing in my mind, and to get sparks of ideas.
This is something I did when building the misfit monster’s world. Because this is fantasy, time is a little warped and made up, but when fleshing out the world that Zadi lived in, contemplating the future was something that was an influence.
With environmental concerns a big issue for everyone, and waste and pollution a world-wide problem, I couldn’t help thinking what would this be like in the future? Or near future? Would we as humans manage to reduce our waste? Or will it get out of hand? How could the waste be reduced? It’s a big problem for the world, but how could it start locally? On a smaller scale? Could this waste be useful? And if so to who? By asking myself a series of questions like this, the neurones in my mind got firing, and ideas began to form. I don’t have a solution to this problem (I wish I did) but on a smaller scale I began to think about who could use this waste. Because I love to make things up, and I love writing in the fantasy genre, I came up with the misfit monsters. They have evolved to use the waste of humans as a way for themselves to survive. Naturally, they are frightened of humans, but there’s an almost symbiotic relationship which is happening under the surface. Humans don’t know about misfit monsters, and vice versa, but they need each other.
In the story, The Jumble Sale, I had the idea of exploring what would happen if there were no new deliveries to the dump for the misfit monsters. How would they cope? After all, it would be great if humans didn’t produce so much waste. Well, let’s just say the misfit monsters were put into chaos (a little more than usual), and it’s up to Zadi to think of a way to help them all overcome this problem.
I also like the concept of upcycling, of making, and using discard objects, and refashioning them into something useful. While I’m not so good at doing this myself, I can create characters who are brilliant at this! And Zadi is one of the best inventors in town. This was a lot of fun to write about. All because I contemplated the future, and what issues there might need to be addressed. I might not have solved the problem of what to do with household waste, but maybe others could be inspired to. We all need to work together on this one.
