my thoughts

Mia is settled in to life after her experiences with her controlling ex-Husband, but when the police inform her that he’s been found dead, not only does it bring everything back, but she’s also worried she’ll be a suspect….because she has something to hide.  But she soon discovers she’s not the only one that hated Rob, and anyone of them could have been the murderer……

This is a fab debut thriller with plenty of unexpected twists.  The chapters alternate which helps us to get to know Rob in the past, and see things from Mia’s view point in the present.  Hughes does a brilliant job of keeping the suspicion on everyone so you’re never really sure who did it until the conclusion.

Rob is a cruel, manipulative bully who will make your blood boil.  The way he controls and exploits others is disgusting; but he sucks you in with his charm in the beginning.  Because he manages to suck the reader in too, it makes it easier to understand how the characters were influenced.  Mia goes through a lot and although at times I felt so frustrated for, and at her I did warm to her and felt sorry for the things she had gone through.  I’m not going to say anything about the other characters – I’ll let you make you own decisions!

Mainly set on a boat, sailing around the mediterranean you can feel how claustrophobic it is for Mia, and her desperate need to get away to land and civilisation.  The boat gives Rob the ultimate control and definitely made me not want to go sailing!  The descriptions  are brilliant and I could imagine the glorious sunshine, marina’s, sea and storms.  I could also really see the changes to Mia as her marriage progressed.

I really enjoyed the twists in this and the ending was fab.  I did feel at times that the story dragged on a little, but still throughly enjoyed it.  Overall a great debut; I’ll be keeping an eye out for Hughes’ next book.  If you’re looking for a new author, a psychological thriller and some glorious sun and sea then this could be for you.  Recommended by me.
