Second post of the day, and I’m over the moon to be on the blog tour for The Passengers by John Marrs.  This is a fantastic book, and absolutely has to be up there as one of my favourite books of 2019 so far!!

the blurb

Eight self-drive cars set on a collision course. Who lives, who dies? You decide.

When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-drive cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course.

The passengers are: a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife – and parents of two – who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem?

my review

What can I say? This book absolutely blew me away!

Set when cars are autonomous and only need to be programmed with a route, the government has a plan in place to have everyone using these Level 5 cars within 10 years.  On this particular day 8 people get into their cars to go about their days, but then find out that their cars have been hijacked, reprogrammed and in 2.5 hours are likely to be dead following a fatal collison.

At the same time a group of professionals including a Government MP, are meeting as part of jury. Little did they know that today they would have to make decisions live on TV……about who lives and who dies.  But it’s not just down to them…..the whole ordeal is spread across the world via news and social media, with the world taking part in an unimaginable ‘reality’ type show.  What will happen to the passengers? Will any of them live? Who will die? Who is responsible?

This is such a well written, brilliant book.  We get to know each of the characters but gradually throughout the book so your opinion can change over and over again! When you think you like someone….you find something else about them.  The story unfolds in the best way, from beginning to end, and we have fantastic insights into what the people of the world are thinking through hashtags and social media which make it feel like it genuinely could be happening!

So… basically NEED to read this book! I read it in less that 24 hours (luckily I had a day off work!) as I honestly couldn’t put it down….it was one of those ‘just one more chapter’ type of books!  This is full of action, fear, twists, turns and lots of OMG moments!!  And it’s being made into a Netflix series apparently…..which I can’t wait for!  Absolutely highly recommended by me!
