Also today I’m delighted to bring you a review of The Voyage by Douglas Falk, an intriguing thriller based around the conspiracy theory of a flat earth….

book blurb & info

John Wilander finds himself reluctantly drawn to an ambitious investigation of a clandestine theory–lured into the rabbit hole by his enigmatic new friend from Stockholm University, the privileged William Milton. William is intensely determined to exhume the mother of all conspiracy theories from its dormancy and usher in the renaissance of a notorious worldview that has been dead and buried for five hundred years…until now.  As John’s pleas for sanity fall on deaf ears, a decision is made. With the aid of astrophysicist Dr. Celeste Wood, the table is set for a voyage to Antarctica that, if successful, could re-shape the world as we know it for all the years to come–with or without him.

my thoughts

When John’s friend William tells him that he’s found something out – something that will change the world as we know it, John is sceptical.  Especially when William reveals that in actual fact….the world is flat.  Despite his initial doubts, John delves into the conspiracy and after meeting Dr. Celeste Wood, an astrophysicist, starts to believe it.

Determined to find out the truth, they plan a voyage to Antarctica….but what will they find? Will their theory be proven? Will they make it past the military guards, and will they make it back alive?

I have to say, I love reading about conspiracy theories so I thoroughly enjoyed this.  When I started I didn’t really know much about the flat earth theory but I definitely do now!  I’ve got to be honest, this book has been sitting on my TBR for a while (thank you Douglas for your patience!) so by the time I got around to it, I’d completely forgotten what I should expect.  But from the moment I started reading and realised, I was sucked in.

The story comes across very well researched and gives a lot of detail around the conspiracy and the reasons why it might be true.  I did find it quite complicated at times as there is a lot of detail, so did find my mind wandering every now and then.  But even if you’re not a big conspiracy fan, this will get you thinking!

John and William are likeable characters and both come across quite ‘well to do’.  I didn’t find them particularly relatable but that didn’t stop me from warming to them and wanting them to have a good trip.

Once the background of the theory had been fully explained, the voyage kicks off and I loved going with John, William and the crew.  The pace of the story definitely picked up and I just wanted to find out whether they would find anything or not.  The ending was surprising and I loved it!

Overall, this is a fantastic and intriguing debut that will suck you in to a conspiracy and make you question our reality.  It’s written really well and Falk comes across as incredibly intelligent.  If you’re looking for you next slow burn thriller, with an intriguing and enjoyable plot then you should check this out.  Recommended by me.

about the author

Douglas Falk was born in Stockholm, Sweden on May 15th 1992. The son of a journalist and an accountant, he was raised in the borough of Norrmalm. After graduating from senior high school, he applied to a five-year long English teaching course at Stockholm University. He eventually came to the realization that a career in teaching was not his calling, and dropped out after a year to pursue his dream profession – writing.

During his later years, he developed a fascination for conspiracy theories on his leisure time and researched them frantically on a daily basis. When he finally put pen to paper with the first script of THE VOYAGE in late 2017, there was no shred of doubt in his mind about what the focal point of the novel would be.

Falk’s debut fiction novel will explore the mother of all conspiracy theories herself: the flat Earth theory. THE VOYAGE, a thriller/adventure novel in the same vein of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series & Michael Crichton’s works, was released on December 3, 2019 – with the sequel THE RAPTURE scheduled for a 2021 release.
