book blurb & info
This Side of Death. When the past comes back to hunt you.
Alex Sheridan believes the only way she can be free of her demons is to kill the men in her life. She has a list, and Crime Scene Investigator Eddie Collins is on it.
Death misses Eddie by inches, and Alex is locked away in Juniper Hill high-security hospital.
Everything is fine for Eddie until one day four years later, when Alex escapes. This time she’s better prepared.
The week that follows ruptures Eddie’s life and shatters the belief he had in his own past, leaving him wondering what really happened, and facing one stark choice: who to kill and who to save.
This Side of Death is the most revealing CSI Eddie Collins novel to date. Prepare to see inside his past and understand what makes him the angriest, most feared, and yet most respected CSI in England.
If you like fast-paced and gripping crime thrillers with a strong forensic element, you’ll love Andrew Barrett’s This Side of Death. It will appeal to fans of Kathy Reichs, Robert Bryndza and Angela Marsons.

This is only the second book I”ve read in the CSI Eddie Collins series and I really enjoyed the last one so was excited to learn more about Eddie. In This Side of Death we’re given a brilliant insight into Eddie’s past and why he’s the way he is; and it’s a sad and shocking tale. But the main focus in this, is the return of Alex. A girl who he dated when he was young, who tried to kill him before, was unsuccessful and ended up locked away at Juniper Hill. But then she escapes…..and she will find Eddie.
And as Eddie tries to continue with his life, he starts to learn secrets from his past; making him question the people around him and the things he knows. And when he comes to deciding who survives, will these revelations make a difference……?
This is a gripping and moving story, full of action, lies, secrets, betrayal, loss and realities. Eddie is his usual rude and mean self, but this book really helped me to understand him more. He’s definitely harsher in this than previous, so if it’s your first encounter with him you may not like him much at times! But he does redeem himself and you’ll see a different side to him when he’s passionate about something, or sticking up for those he cares about.
He’s had a harsh past, and this book goes some way to explaining why he behaves the way he does. Even though at times he will make you cringe with some of the things he says, you can’t help but love him. Especially now we know some of his underlying issues.
The plot around Alex is fantastic. She is brutal! And although she is a full on psychopath, she’s a fantastic and complex character. Having suffered herself when she was younger, this has had a massive impact on her mental health and no doubt has spawned the monster she is. But at times we also get to see the vulnerable young woman that she once was. However, this doesn’t excuse the things she does, and they are pretty shocking, so be prepared for a little bit of gore!
Overall, this is a dark and gripping story allowing us to get to know our favourite grumpy CSI better, whilst taking us on a bumpy rollercoaster ride where some shocking secrets will come out. The ending to this had me gasping! Although you could probably read this as a standalone, I would definitely recommend going back and reading the others. I haven’t had a chance yet but am looking forward to reading the first four at some point.
Highly recommended by me!
