Kyle’s wife Hannah hasn’t come home from work so he reports her missing. The local community get together to help look for her as part of the #FindHannah campaign, including Julia. But there is one person out there who knows where she is.
As Julia helps with the search she finds herself getting closer to Kyle, but when she discovers something unexpected she starts questioning the things she thought she knew. But is she putting herself in danger? Where is Hannah? Who is responsible? And is everyone really who they seem?
This definitely got under my skin! There are many unnerving moments in this, and the whole storyline will get you thinking…..do we really know what goes on behind closed doors? A dark psychological read covering aspects of domestic abuse, this is written tactfully and sensitively.
The story is told from a number of different characters viewpoints, changing at each chapter. The chapters are also quite short so they really holds you attention and make you want to keep reading to see what’s happening, or what the next character is thinking. There are some really interesting characters in this, but I don’t want to say too much as it’s better for you to make your own assessment…..Just know that at least one of them filled me with anger!!
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. As the story is being told from the first person of each character, it’s informal, flows easily and really feels like the characters are talking to you. As well as covering domestic abuse, it also looks at the relationships of some of the other couples which was interesting and thought-provoking. This aspect made the story feel even more real to me.
The other thing that really stood out to me was the endings for the characters. Having read quite a lot of psychological thrillers, I was pleasantly surprised…..
Overall, a great debut psychological thriller from Rose (she has written other books, just not in this genre). If you’re looking for your next domestic, psychological thriller with interesting characters and a storyline that will get you thinking, then go and check this out.
about the author
“Under your skin” is Rose’s fourth novel. Her previous three novels were romantic fiction published by Crooked Cat. She has made the genre jump from “chick lit” to psychological thriller and is enjoying delving into a darker corner of her mind!
Rose has also written two short plays which were performed in the Black Box theatre in Belfast.
She discusses book reviews on her You Tube channel and writes theatre reviews for her blog.
She loves nothing more than curling up with her cats and a good book. She has two rescue cats – Toots, who is ginger with an inquisitive face and Soots, who is black and hops along on his 3 legs looking ever so cute.
